Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/03/2005

Number: 1

Observed a Common Loon stalking a small group of Canadian Geese on Great
Bay,in Durham, late yesterday afternoon. On the high tide the loon was seen in
the channel between Little & Great Bay. Between 10 & 20 CG were foraging in
the cove on the SE side of Adams Point. The Loon began drifting toward the
geese , his neck outstretched skimming along the water! He dove underwater
and soon the geese were startled into flying off in all directions. The Loon
emerged and began foraging were the geese had been. This is the second time I
have observed this behavior. The pervious time it was a Common Loon stalking a
pair of Red Breasted Mergansers, with the same outcome. Apparently, the Loon
dominates the area!
