Oh my goodness- the woodcock has returned to the ponds behind the house. I heard him calling for the first time tonight while I was boiling down a batch of sap. I always count the woodcock as one of the definite signs of spring in rural Madoc. The snow has now almost totally gone from the bush; the cluster flies are buzzing everywhere; and the ground is starting to thaw. The temperature for tomorrow is supposed to be +10C and I will be watching for earthworms very soon. My phoebes have not yet returned but I am listening for their calls as well.
