Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/30/2005

Number: 1

Finally got a chance to get out in the field today. I went to Lake Benbrook, Benbrook (Tarrant County), Texas, just west a few miles from Fort Worth, and saw over a dozen monarchs, all males except for one female. These observations were within the space of about an hour and a half. Wing
condition was good -- but obviously worn, some having wing pieces missing,
and obvious scales missing. I netted several, and while on the wing they
looked to be "fresh" but when you've got it in hand you can tell it's much
older than first impressions. That's one of the problems with
observation-only observations! These are definite migrants. There's not a breeding population here in the Dallas/Fort worth area through the winter.
