Our tulips are up. They popped up very quickly once the snow was gone. We also planted some bulbs from last year and they came up first. Last spring, when the bulbs had stopped blooming and the leaves had faded , we dug up the old bulbs and put them in a paper bag to save and plant this fall. We planted the old bulbs in the center of our garden with the new ones on the edges. The old bulbs came up first this spring by several days. One difference is that we planted the old bulbs in clusters, while the new ones were planted singlely. Another observation: we put temperature probes in with two bulbs and a probe at the surface of the soil and another probe in the soil at the same depth as the ones with the two bulbs. We monitored their temps all winter. The probes with the two bulbs were always slightly warmer during Dec. Jan. and Feb. then the other two. Does the density of the bulbs allow them to retain heat better?
