Went to the Big Canal on the east of the Cunningham Ranch in North
Maverick County this evening. On the way
over there to the milkweed patch we saw 3 adult monarchs. Two
flying in circles around one another, one singleton about half a mile
west of the canal.
We examined the canal bank for one fourth mile:
We found 18 eggs, 2 second instars, and 1 fourth instar.
We flagged 10 plants and checked about 10 others that were vacant.
It was 86.5dF, 38% humidity, 6.8mph wind from 290WNW. We were
781' asl @ 28.5101N, -100.3353W.
On Thursday, we found a tiny plant no more than 3" high with 2 stems.
It had 8 eggs on it and no other plants nearby. We determined then
to rescue those today and were expecting first instars, but they were
all still in the eggs stage so must have been laid earlier in the day on
Thursday. They were collected with the 4th instar.
