It's hard and pretty fruitless [to know when you see your first spring monarch] when you live in New Orleans....... We
have monarchs and milkweed and caterpillars year round....... I have got
3 caterpillars that are going to pupate any minute in my garden and lots
of little guys and eggs on the leaves. Plus adults all over the place.
Most have that "fresh look" so I don't think they are migrants. (We do
know that some New Orleans butterflies migrate -- just not all of them
and sometimes in the early spring we see very battered, faded guys who I
always think must be at the end of a hard journey.)
