Drove the 4-wheeler quietly along the wooded edge of the ravine to avoid spooking the nesting redtail hawk. The clumsy nest of all sorts of sticks has been busy for several years and seems to get bigger. The treetop nest swaying above me at 60'limits a direct view. Many droppings, 2 rooster pheasant feathers, feathers of other birds and part of an eggshell around the base of the tree tell me there has been serious time spent on occupying the nest. Ladyhawk's tail was sticking out over the edge. The egg was moist inside, indicating a new hatchling. The hawks use the ravines for hunting, riding the wind currents above them. My bird feeders even get occasional visit. Twice I've seen a snow bunting and a dozing mourning dove snatched deftly in a flurry of wings. My husband reminds me, "it is a bird feeder...."
