Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/14/2005

Number: 1

Just received my first monarch sighting in Arizona. In the area of Kitt Peak, southwest of Tucson. Once again, I question whether there is much of a spring (return) flow of monarchs through Arizona, as we are in mid-April and just got our first sighting. During the autumn flow, many of our random butterfly counts in southern Arizona will list monarchs, but on the spring counts, monarchs are conspicuously absent.

In all honesty, I don't know whats going on w/ monarchs in AZ. We haven't collected anywhere near enough data, but the two fall tagged migraters that were recovered with both heading in a southerly direction.

However, there was a small group of overwintering monarchs near Parker Dam on the CA/AZ border this past winter. Where did they come from? If only they could talk! Actually, if only we could understand what they are saying!

April 27
Saw my second monarch of the season last weekend. Traveling from north to south and in a hurry.
