I saw the first Monarch of the season here in Ames, Iowa this evening, May 17, while out on my daily survey for Red Admirals on the Iowa State University campus. I noticed one Red Admiral vigorously chasing a much larger butterfly - and suddenly realized this was a Monarch! They seem to be late arriving here this year, unless I've missed them somehow.
Guess it's time to contact Journey North again.
Cheers,
Royce

The weather was mostly cloudy, slightly humid, with temps in the mid-70s. The southerly winds were fairly strong, around 25 mph - perhaps the Monarch might have taken advantage of the wind flow.
