Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/21/2005

Number: 1

I saw a monarch at about 1 pm Saturday May 21, 2005. Tobermory is at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, the hopping off point for northward migrating birds and butterflies crossing Lake Huron/Georgion Bay for Manitoulin Island and the mainland of Northern Ontario. Temperature was 20 degrees C, wind was from the north-west but had been southerly throughout the morning. This butterfly was quite faded but as it was moving quickly on the wind I wasn't able to observe any other details of it's condition. I was quite surprised, but very pleased to see a migrating monarch this early. Our cottage has milkweed and is host to monarch larva in July and August, but it is far too early at present for milkweed development there.
