The single monarch I saw flying across the Northwestern University campus today was only the third I have seen this year (first sighting on May 14). May in Illinois, as in much of the Midwest, was unusually cool, so the new generation may have been slow to develop. This individual was flying toward the university lagoon, which has milkweed along its shoreline. I've checked a number of milkweed plants in recent days, but have not seen any eggs.
