Tonight I had a discussion with butterfly breeder Rod
Parrott of Port Hope, Ontario (about 100 km east of
Toronto on the north shore of Lake Ontario). We both
agreed that the spring here has been a cool one and
the arrival of spring is about 3 weeks late. He and
his colleages have walked for hours and visited
flowering lilac shrubs along the north shore of Lake
Ontario. No sign of monarchs. In fact, Rod has trapsset to capture red admirals and question marks and so
far he has captured nothing. Other butterfly species
are very few in number. (i.e. one painted lady two
weeks ago)
His milkweed is still very small and he noted a number
of tree species on which butterfly species feed that
have leaves just opening up.
Rod has also spoken to colleagues in Montreal, and
they also report the late emergence of plants and
arrival of spring migrants.
Fortunately, the last couple of days have been very
warm here, with temperatures in the high 70's F.
