Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/07/2005

Number: 1

Janis Miller, Horticulture staff, reported finding an inch long monarch caterpillar on Asclepias purpurescens Purple milkweed that we have growing in the new butterfly garden behind the main exhibit building of the Virginia Living Museum. Oddly, the plant or its surrounding plants did not seem overly chewed up. It is always possible the caterpillar was brought in by a volunteer and placed, but we were given no notice of that.
