I observed an interesting sight last Sunday. As we were sitting outside in the morning enjoying the beautiful day, I noticed a “flock” of butterflies fly quickly over our house. We had been sitting there about an hour prior to this and there were no butterflies. Then more followed, some in larger groups and some in smaller, some single, and they all continued in the same direction - over a specific area of our house and in the same direction. My husband estimated it was Northwest. This continued in a dramatic fashion for 3 hours, at least, then it tapered off. They are basically flying over one projecting corner of our house, so they need to decide either to go right or left to get around this corner – most go left. Then they get back on their northwesterly route.
I checked my GPS-they were heading from our house in Napa directly toward Santa Rosa - at least at that point in time.
We have the type of garden that is attractive to birds, bees and butterflies, but the first batch of butterflies looked like they were on a mission. They were flying so quickly, I couldn't see what they looked like, so I wandered around, and found in the Lavender.
