I have spent 12 days over the last month surveying for bog obligate butterflies in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This was the 4th day of my second trip and these were the first monarchs I saw. They were encountered at a large, very old patch of lilac flowers along the southern edge of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. They next day I saw more monarchs at several locations in the eastern Upper Peninsula.
