Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/15/2005

Number: 1

Was looking at the nice, tall milkweed in our yard this evening and spotted some suspicious holes. On closer inspection, I found a little newly hatched monarch larva! I could find no more, and not even any eggs. We took a walk to some wild milkweed along the roadside ditch about a 1/2 mile away, and found 3 eggs, and 2 more larva there. I don't know the sizes of the instars, but the larva on the milkweed out of town were bigger than the one in our yard. I'd say that one was 2 days old, and one was 3 days old maybe. We brought them all in to raise to adulthood.
