Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/09/2005

Number: 1

June 9th: County Road 607 near Ishpeming is as close to a boreal forest as one can get in the Upper Peninsula. Fifty-nine moose were reintroduced in 1987 in this very dense forested area. The number has grown to 175. This road heads north and goes from paved to dirt quickly and continues for 20 miles into the forest as it narrows and deteriorates rapidly. We didn’t expect to see monarchs in these conditions yet one did float past us heading back down the rocky edge. There wasn’t any milkweeds to be seen! We did find several dozen Canadian (I believe) Tiger Swallowtails gathered at puddles of water along the roadside at two separate stops. As a mater of fact, Eastern Tiger Swallowtails and/or Canadian Tiger Swallowtails were abundant throughout our travels in the UP.
