June 14th: Crystal Falls: Home to the “Humongous Fungus”, the world’s largest and oldest living organism. This Honey Mushroom covers 38 acres beneath the forest south of Crystal Falls near the Wisconsin border. It is believed to be 1,500 to 10,000 years old and may weigh 100 tons. Down one of the roads where this giant mushroom grows underneath the surface but sprouts spores in the fall we found plenty of milkweed and two monarchs.
