Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/18/2005

Number: 1

Having watched and raised Monarchs for many years, I am very concerned. Desperate times for Desperate measures. Due to the amount of predators i.e...wasps, assassin bugs and some new kind of ant looking creature I have never seen before, I have been harvesting eggs and bring them into an enclosure to raise. The larva are disappearing immediately if left outside. I am able to release about 20 a week by doing this.
I am also concerned about the lack of other butterflies. Having citrus trees, passion vine and numerous sources of nectar and food I usually have many varities. The fritarillies which are very prolific here are not being seen. I have only seen one giant swallowtail and a few of the pipevine.
Besides genetic farming do you have any idea of what is happening?
