I saw my very first adult monarch butterfly of 2005 this morning, July 20. It was over a hayfield and was investigating some flowering plants. I saw it at very close range and was able to determine it was healthy, active and very "new" looking. It did not appear to be in migration mode while I watched it for many minutes.
I did not see a single monarch during spring migration. Normally I see several in the May-June timeframe, but this year they seemed to be in very short supply in this area. I have been checking hundreds of milkweed plants for eggs and larvae for the past 6-8 weeks and noticed nothing. I was beginning to wonder if there was going to be a new generation coming from this region. However, I have no way of knowing where this single individual was hatched. Hopefully there are a lot more where it came from.
