Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/22/2005

Number: 1

The other day while walking along the beach in Kenosha, WI (So. WI) I found between 10-20 fresh monarchs laying dead along the waters edge. This was within 100 feet stretch of beach. They all looked perfect except that they were dead of course.

After thinking about it, I wonder if they could have been drinking through the sand and the water washed them away, or could they have gotten tired while crossing the lake. This seems to happen every year at this time and I was wondering if anyone knows the best explanation for why this occurs.
