I have observed many wild pupa with the characteristic spots and brown discoloring associated with the protozoan parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (O e). I am still finding many larva and pupa and still observing some mating behavior. I'll soon be catching some females to have all stages available for my students. I'm going to try to use the clear tape on the abdomen to determine if they are infected with the protozoan. I'll only use non-infected ones. Have others observed much protozoan (O e) discoloration this year? Most years I observe 10 to 20 with protozoan caused deaths. I have already found at least 30? Only one tachinid fly or parisitoid so far this year.
