Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/27/2005

Number: 1

This year has been much better for monarchs than last year. I didn't see the first monarch here until June 15. They were quite scarce. After about 3 weeks I saw them a bit more often, and every three week interval after that they became more common. Now would be after the third hatching and I see them almost every day AND I see mulitples. Not just one, but two or sometimes three. I have recently seen mature caterpillars so I expect another hatch. I haven't seen groups doing roost like behavior yet so I think migration will be slow and spotty. More like last year than like the previous years where they gathered in groups and left around the 28th of August. None of the monarchs I have seen looked to be getting ready to migrate. In fact yesterday one was laying eggs on a milkweed plant in my garden.
