Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/29/2005

Number: 1

Tonite's monarchs were very young ones & restless, flitting in singles & dancing pairs. They inspected a polar grove, then the pond's straight willows. As the sun set, they whirled out over the meadow and back. 12 picked a limb on the east side of the willow & positioned themselves close together. Others flew circles around the surrounding trees, weaving in & out of the branches without landing. By scent or sound, they are somehow able to locate a roosting group. This willow limb is an old roost, quite popular several years ago, but not used in the last 3. Others from the group settles singly in the surrounding willow leaves. Upon landing each butterfly in this group opened & closed it's wings slowly several times, before quieting for the night. They wandered as darkness fell, dark silhouettes against the fading light. Somehow, they are able to find one another even without much light.
