Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/22/2005

Number: 1

Last week Monday evening (the 22nd) I got a call from a friend in Nicollet, MN (44:16 N, 94:11 W). She told me there were hundreds and hundreds of monarchs in the trees near their farm. We didn't get down there until Friday after work. We only tagged 26 wild monarchs, the biggest netful being around a dozen in the only roosting clump I saw.
Hoping we had been early or somehow missing a big group, we ran down again last night August 30. Sigh. 13 tagged monarchs. In years past I have tagged those "hundreds" anywhere between the 28th of August and 3rd of September. I had such high hopes for similar fun tagging this year, even had it penciled in on my calendar for this week!
