Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 08/30/2005

Number: 1

We went over to Lake Michigan (on the Michigan side of the lake) on Aug 30th 6 PM. There was a great monarch migration going on, the wind concentrating them on the lakeshore. In one binocular view, saw 162 in 3 minutes.

The butterflies were migrating until almost dark, then just dropped into the trees with a beautiful sunset over the lake. We were watching from a high dune and from the beach. Did not see clusters forming, just wafting into the trees and settling nilly-willy in the twilight.

Seeing them overhead or straight out, they were just floating with wings set, letting the wind carry them. Sometimes they were going sideways and sometimes even backwards.

There was also a dragonfly migration going on but it seemed lower in number (although they were harder to see).

Winds were out of the ENE 8-11 mph. Observations were made Saugatuck-Douglas, Michigan.
