When I went out for my usual Labor Day weekend search for monarch caterpillars for the start of school, I was disappointed to find the large field of milkweed I usually use unavailable from road construction, but was amazed to find two caterpillars in a small patch of second-growth milkweed right at the roadside on Bullis Road, a few miles away! Some years I find no caterpillars at all, so this looks to me to be a sign that the monarch population in Western NY did well this summer.
