Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/28/2005

Number: 1

08/28/05: Collected 17 infant caterpillars (.2cm to .5cm) and 4 eggs from tender new-growth milkweed in field harrowed 08/12/05). All eggs had dark tips.

08/29/05: Eggs hatched over 18 hour period; larva observed eating egg shells.

09/04/05: All larva doing well. Range in size from .8cm to 3cm.

09/04/05: Found two eggs on new-growth milkweed collected to feed 21 larva collected previously. Put milkweed with eggs in separate tank because last year I observed that large larvae ate eggs and leaves they were on (accidentally?).

Question: Do Monarchs migrate south from further north, arrive here and start new generations on their way south? Do the Canadian Monarchs really make it all the way to Mexico? Or are the eggs and larva I find well into early October the offspring of Monarchs that started the migration?

Where do I go to find answers to questions? Also, What are the species that prey on eggs and tiny larvae? There are so many signs on leaves that eggs h
