I just drove in from northwest Iowa and haven't seen anything that would lead me to say the migration is underway. In the last 6 weeks there have been many monarchs throughout central Iowa but I haven't noticed any purposely directional movement. Now that I hear Ames is experienced a higher number, I'll be watching across the Des Moines area.
I still have lots of egg laying in my habitat (I have them in my flight cage but I expect them in there not in the wild) - at this rate it seems I'll have monarchs until Christmas. I'm hoping to have everything cleared out by the middle of October. I am somewhat surprised at the egg laying still in the wild. The milkweed is still looking very good around our area.
