Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/04/2005

Number: 1

My family and I climbed Owl's Head Mountain, a little mountain in Keene NY, on Sunday 9/4/05. At the summit we were amazed at the monarchs streaming by. In the span of about a half hour we counted easily 80 butterflies flying across the top of this mountain.

Owls Head Mountain is about 2200 feet. The weather was cool and misting in the morning but as the afternoon arrived it had cleared and was partly sunny with temps in the seventies. We were on top from 3:30- 4pm. The winds I believe were from the northeast at maybe 10-15mph. There were monarchs flying lower than us and some flying maybe thirty feet over us while we were on the summit but most were flying at eye level across the summit along the same path.
