On the 31st starting at 7 AM we checked the area at Muskegon State Park that we have checked the last 2 years for overnight roosts. The wind was N 8-11 mph, 63 degrees. In 1 hour 30 minutes we found about 325 monarchs, with clusters of 32, 28 and 20. At about 8:30 AM they seemed to leave the roost site (several acres of mixed pines and deciduous trees) and start migrating. We stopped in Grand Haven and again in Saugatuck/Douglas on our way south that morning and counted but the numbers migrating were smaller tha the previous evening (reported for 8/30/05), but then it was earlier in the day.
Highest number seen roosting for the 3 years of observation.
