Signs of Fall

Date: 09/08/2005

Number: 1

Don Davis found a tagged monarch butterfly here on September 3rd. To his great surprise, he discovered that the butterfly had been tagged a week earlier 165 miles to the southwest!

Why would a monarch butterfly come north during fall migration?

The strong winds of Hurricane Katrina apparently carried the butterfly northeast as the storm moved overhead.

The monarch had been tagged in Ohio on August 26th by long-time butterfly tagger, Julie Clemens. It was on the north shore of Lake Erie at the time. Ironically, it was feeding hungrily from the wetland flowers, fueling up for its trip to Mexico!
