Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/08/2005

Number: 1

What a joy to behold but over 20 monarch caterpillars making short order of my milkweed. They are being extremely selective in their eating habits and only eating one of the three kinds I have growing . They are 90% eating the milkweed that grows the bright orange flowers (I apologize for not knowing the name at this writing). As of tonight, none of the plants are left, and I am hoping that they will choose to eat the swamp milkweed. They are large, too. Most are over 1 1/2 inches and at least the diameter of a pencil. What a surprise since I didn't think I would get any "hits" this year, and was hoping that next year would prove to be better. You never know!
