Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/09/2005

Number: 1

Yesterday was our first day of first grade at Maurice Hawk School in Princeton Junction, NJ. A newly emerged Monarch was waiting for us as we arrived! Today, we tagged and released her to begin her journey to Mexico! The weather was beautiful, sunny and warm. She took off toward the northeast, but quickly circled around, right over our playground, and headed southwest! How did she know how to do that?

We hope to have many more releases this fall. So far, we have seven larvae and chrysilides. Our teacher tells us that she had 120 eggs and larvae for a class that she helped to teach this summer in New Jersey -- "Monarchs in the Classroom," part of the Monarch Teachers Network. What a great year!! We hope it is a good one for everyone -- Monarchs and kids. :)
