Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/28/2005

Number: 1

The first monarch I saw at our school garden was on July 28, a warm, sunny day. Since this was during summer vacation, I can't be certain if this was the first arrival or not. I continued to stop by the garden periodically to look for butterflies and caterpillars and saw a mating pair in and around the garden during the first week of August. Since then we've had several butterflies, eggs, caterpillars, chrysalids and newly emerged butterflies.
Our busiest week of tagging (so far) was the last week of August when we tagged 16, mostly newly emerged butterflies. This may not sound like many compared with some areas, but our little patch of milkweed is only about a 5 foot square with approximately 15 common milkweed plants.
With the threat of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ophelia off the NC coast, conditions over the past several days have been windy and overcast. We do still have a fair number of eggs and caterpillars and a dozen or so chrysalids in and around the garden and another
