I drove 70 miles each way today from Omaha to the Audubon Society's Spring Creek Prairie southwest of Lincoln today to do a semi-weekly butterfly transect count. Saw 11 monarchs along my transect at , three of which were obviously migrating, and one of which was nectaring on dotted gayfeather. But the real fun was counting all the migrants crossing Interstate 80 as I drove down and back. Saw 87 on the way down (approximately 10 to 11 AM
CDT) and 41 on the way back (approximately 2 to 3 PM). Today looks like the one perfect migration day that we get each September - temperatures in the 70's, very slight wind (from SE), clear skies.
This is usually the peak week for us each year.
