Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/14/2005

Number: 1

This morning, I spoke with Sarah Rupert at Point Pelee National Park Interpretive Centre. Sarah reported that the monarch migration in the park has been "flat", and wonders if the migrating monarchs have met favourable conditions further east (i.e. Niagara peninsula or on Lakes Erie and and Ontario) and crossed the border into the U.S.A. further east.

The largest number of monarchs counted at the tip of Point Pelee was clustering of about 1000 on the tip one night over the Labour Day Weekend.

I was still seeing many migrating monarchs soaring through city streets and over the expressways in the Toronto area on Monday, but little activity yesterday and today - possibly in advance of a cold front scheduled to move in with rain this afternoon.
