Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/14/2005

Number: 1

I received a call from a friend of mine in Two Rivers. She was called by a couple that lives on Lake Michigan. They said "The monarchs are coming in". Sure enough, the following day I drove down Memorial Drive from Reed Ave to Columbus Street and counted 60+ monarchs on the 3 mile drive. The monarchs were just starting their warmup flights around their roosting trees.

At my own home in Mishicot as well as the surrounding area, I have been noticing migratory behaviors since Aug 29th. The patroling behaviors of the males had ceased by then. There had also been some southwestern movement across Hwy 42 at the rate of approx. 7 monarchs per mile. As of Sept 15th the majority of the monarchs that had been fueling up in my garden, had left.

Another interesting observation in Marinette....my sister-in-law has reported finding eggs as of Sept 12th. It looks like there may be a small 'second wave', that is IF they manage to develop in time before it freezes. I still have 2 Chysalis's
