Signs of Fall

The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have really been stacking up along the midcoast of Texas the past few days.

Our kindergarten grandson sat inside the back door at five this afternoon and his best count of hummers actually seated at the three feeders at his eye level was ten. I was counting over his shoulder and I think he was one low but I was watching seven other feeders also.

A registered research tagger netted and tagged 82 hummers in two hours in our backyard ... right after dawn a couple of years ago ... with one assistant.

The Rubythroats get here and wait for a favorable wind to make that jump out across the Gulf. While they wait they "tank up" on every bit of energy producing nectar they can find.

Weather: 99 degrees F, wind at 15 mph from the south.
