Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/19/2005

Number: 1

It seems as if the migration has moved across the Lake!

On the south shore of Lake Erie at Dunkirk, we are seeing hundreds of monarchs for the first time in the goldenrod on or near the shoreline in far western New York. The first of the crowd started yesterday (9/18/05). I tagged about 50 in two hours - not great but better than nothing, which is what we had been seeing.

Today the same field had many times more monarchs nectaring - tagged 75 in an hour all by myself.

I expect that if the weather holds we will be tagging into the hundreds per hour over the next few days. The migration seems to me to be great this year by comparison to the past 10 or so, if a bit late. The goldenrod was late blooming - perhaps they waited for the food to show up!
