Monarch (OTHER Observations)

First day of Autumn: the perfect day to report our incredible Summer with the Monarch butterflies! I'm relieved to report this Summer was a huge success - a complete turnaround from last year's Monarch-less Summer! :) Many females laid eggs on our swamp milkweed in July, resulting in 40+ caterpillars beginning of August, and 40+ pretty chrysalids that hung throughout our garden from plants, fences, lattice, and bird bath beginning in mid-August! And starting Aug.28, 33+ gorgeous new Monarch butterflies were born, the last ones we witnessed emerging being on Sept.11. Incredibly 2 more caterpillars were discovered on Sept.10, pupating that same day! I doubt these chrysalids will form butterflies this late in the season with the onslaught of frosty nights this past week! But I'm super happy to report that our native prairie garden produced for certain, 33 Monarch butterflies, both sexes, and most likely more we didn't notice. It was a VERY special Summer! :)!!!
