A huge gathering of migrating monarch butterflies - up to several thousand a night - occurred over the last few evenings in a grove of trees in Jerusalem Township.
Doris Stifel, Toledo's renowned Butterfly Lady and monarch authority, said the clustering was beyond expectations.
"This is the best thing I've seen in this part of the country. It is the closest thing to what I've seen in Mexico, ever"
The migrant monarchs, likely having completed a crossing of western Lake Erie from Ontario, clustered to rest in the grove of trees.
It is probable that other roosting monarchs have occurred in trees throughout the region.
