Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/24/2005

Number: 1

With the leading edge of high clouds from Hurricane Rita filtering the sun, a nice wave of Monarchs flew below. The peak seemed to be from Noon to 3:00 p.m. They flew at all levels, but well over half were above the tree tops, riding on thermals. Temperature was in the low 80's, very humid, no wind to very light wind from the S/SE.

2:00 to 3:00 p.m. observed 90 Monarchs.

To my surprise, I also observed a mated pair. The male flew with the attached female to roost on my pin oak at around 2:30 pm.
