Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/25/2005

Number: 1

Saturday morning I was driving across town and noticed 4 Monarchs about 40 feet in the air. So I kept looking and sure enough as I was traveling across town I counted 43 Monarchs. I drove back down the street to double check what I was seeing and I counted 27 on the return trip. Then on the way home I counted 32 more. We had had storms the night before and it was a cool, cloudy morning. By 10:45 the sun was beginning to come out and it had warmed up alot. It was truly a sight to see! Our 2nd grade classes have been studying and raising a Monarch and I am hoping that some of our students also noticed the migration taking place this weekend.

On 9/25 I would say my observation times were about 10 minutes each time I counted them. I traveled the same path 3 different times. I did not want to miss anything! It was an awesome sight to see and one that doesn't come around very often. My husband and I saw many Monarchs all day on Saturday and fewer on Sunday. This is very unusual for Russiaville, Indiana. We may see a few here and there over the summer but never anything like this was.
