Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2005

Number: 1

September 27
We watched Monarchs for one hour from 11:25 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. with a wind speed of 5-7 mph. During that time we saw 135 Monarchs. We calculated that we saw 2.25 Monarch Butterflies per minute.

We received an email from a man in Ponca City that said more Monarchs are headed our way. We will be counting again at the same time tomorrow to see if the numbers increase or decrease and discussing why.

September 20
We only had ten minutes to observe. We saw 2 Monarchs in the ten minutes.

October 6
Our class sighted several Monarch butterflies on the playground at noon. They were flying over our heads while we were at recess. It was a group of only about six or seven, but we thought it might be important. They were flying around and around. Students mentioned to me that they saw some Monarchs the day before (10/05/04) at the football stadium around dusk also.
