My family left Houston on Wednesday 9-21-05 to escape the threat from hurricane Rita. We drove to Canton Lake, Oklahoma to spend the weekend with family. My two children along with three nieces and a nephew were very excited to discover a Monarch roost while we were there! Thank goodness I brought my tags! We estimate anywhere from 100 -200 Monarchs were roosting in a protected group of trees near the lake. Hanging in clusters of 2-10 on Saturday 9-24 they hung low to the ground so tagging was easy. On Sunday 9-25 the Monarchs were harder to tag because they were clustered higher in the trees, and seemed more active and faster to fly away. The entire weekend Monarchs floated across the sky at varioius altitudes... all heading South!
