Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/28/2005

Number: 1

Last night at sunset as I was walking at Hammonassett State Park in Clinton, CT I observed over 70 monarchs on their migratory route. I also made a few other observations. I noticed that most of the monarchs were flying in groups of two like they were "couples". I also observed that the monarchs roosted in PINE trees and that surprised me. Perhaps they rest overnight in pine trees. This has been the best monarch migration season I have witnessed for the last 18 years. My hope has been restored. Also, my class has observed many monarchs in our courtyard this week. There are at least 5 monarchs on our butterfly bushes at all times today. We finished all of our tagging last week so we are simply observing and it's amazing how many monarchs are here this year!
