Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/28/2005

Number: 5000

We have a Ranch in Fisher County, Texas, about 22 miles NE of Sweetwater or 40 miles NW of Abilene, with a couple of miles of Chyna Creek running through. The creek banks are lined with mature willow trees. We have had Monarchs roost in a specific 1/4 mile section of the creek for the past 4 years in a row, approx the first week of October each year. They spent the night there on Wednesday night, Sept 28th, 2005. Early that evening we went and saw them, thousands and thousands. In the trees and grass, they flew up as we slowly walked through, creating a truly surreal experience. We took a few video clips and about 40-50 good digital photos. We would love to share them if you would like, just let us know! --mike--

Editor’s Note: We are estimating 5000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands upon thousands.”
