Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2005

Number: 1

This afternoon we sighted several monarchs in our backyard flying in a south to southwest direction. In a period of about an hour we spotted at least 100. We did not really have time to count as we were trying to catch and tag at the same time. This may not seem like many to some but is more than we have seen in a long time. Many were flying very high and landing in the oak trees for a brief rest then moving on. We were able to capture and tag 25 that dropped down to nectar in our newly designated Monarch Waystation (#33).
