Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2005

Number: 1

While on a 2 hour walk from Elizabeth Airfield to and along the beach and back, we saw well over a thousand monarchs nectaring on fall wildflowers including thistle and goldenrod. The time was approximately 3-5:00 p.m. the weather was sunny and clear. Wind was 6-7 mph out of the SE. There were at least 12 on one plant approximately 3' high which we photographed. There were 5-15 monarchs on nearly every flowering plant we passed, some even more. Looking across the fields of beach grasses we could see monarchs hovering everywhere. Incredible sight!
